Who We Are
E-Reo was born from challenges arising during the pandemic. Heiura Itae-Tetaa is native to Tahiti and opened a Tahitian language school in 2016 to teach others the language. As the pandemic and social distancing began in 2021, Heiura needed a way to continue teaching her language without physically being together.
Instead of building her own version of Duolingo for Tahitian, she expanded her vision to create a platform that ANY indigenous language could use to preserve and revitalize their language.
The idea was simple: create a database that supported words, translations, audio and other cultural media, and build software that would automatically build apps people are already using, now in their native language.
Heiura teamed up with Sebastien Christian, with his background in linguistics, software platform development, and AI, to create a platform that would empower not only Tahitian speakers but indigenous communities worldwide.
Since then they have breathed life into more than 25 indigenous languages with over 40,000 learners and hope to reach 100 languages during UNESCO's Decade of Indigenous Languages ending in 2032.
